Walking in Pete's Shoes: The Cards

Shortly after Peter passed, his girlfriend, Karen (pictured right with Pete), told this story. Karen's grandparents were going to a movie. Her grandfather was in a wheelchair. A kindly soul came up to them and helped with the wheelchair, then paid for their movie tickets. He then handed them a card with the words Random Acts of Kindness written on it.

Karen's grandparents were so touched by this encounter. They spoke of it often.

After Karen related this story to me, she said, "That's something Pete would do." So she came up with the idea for the cards.

We are asking people to honor Peter by initiating acts of kindness, attaching a card to it if convenient, with the hopes of another such act being passed on.

Please share with us some of your experiences. Thank you.

Acts of Kindness in Pete's Honor

  • Money was given to a single mom to help with rent.
  • Cookies made by Pete's older brother Tom are taken to Orange Peel (Pete's business) on a regular business.
  • Basketballs with "To you, from Pete" have been given to children.
  • Every year on Peter's birthday, his brother's cookies are taken to the faculty at Cape Henry Collegiate School.
  • A pair of Peter's shoes were sent to Mexico (to a church-sponsored activity).
  • Four pairs of basketball shoes were purchased for children who needed them.
  • Christmas present were donated to five children in 2008.
  • When Jeremy, Peter's younger brother was in Nepal studying during the spring semester of 2009, he met a Tibetan monk. This monk had escaped from Tibet with his family, returned and been imprisoned, and was now back in Nepal. He was unusual in that he was taller than most Tibetans, had bigger feet and therefore had difficulty finding size 13 (Peter's size) shoes. Jeremy resolved to get him a pair of Peter's shoes. When Jeremy returned to the states, he arranged to meet up with one of his Tibetan teachers, who coincidently was teaching summer classes at UVA. Jeremy drove to Charlottesville and delivered a pair of Peter's shoes to be hand-carried back to Nepal!
